SK Rapid Wien have delved into the lower leagues in search of new talent with the purchase of FC Blau-Weiss Linz defender Thomas Burgstaller.
'Absolutely thrilled'
The 23-year-old, who has been a regular starter with the Austrian third division side, signed a two-year contract with the option of a further year's extension. "I'm absolutely thrilled," said Burgstaller. "Rapid's offer wasn't the only one I received from Austrian Bundesliga clubs, but it was by far the most attractive as here they are keen on young Austrian players."
Defensive qualities
Rapid coach Josef Hickersberger admitted he had been impressed by the defensive qualities of Burgstaller, who began his career with SK St. Magdalena, and who has scored six goals in 24 appearances this season. "I was looking for a strong tackler and aerial strength and I have seen him performing several times," he said. "I am sure that he will be able to break into our starting lineup straight away."
