PSV to wait on Hoogstrate

Jordi Hoogstrate, on loan at FC Groningen, will miss the rest of the season as he recovers from depression.

Jordi Hoogstrate's loan spell at FC Groningen from PSV Eindhoven has come to a premature end as the youngster will miss the rest of the season to recover from depression.

'A bit depressed'
The 19-year-old is receiving psychiatric help after a difficult season which frequently saw him left on the substitutes' bench. "Because of all of the set-backs, sickness and injuries he got a bit depressed," said Groningen coach Ron Jans. "He is now undergoing treatment with a psychologist."

Troublesome season
A regular in the Dutch Under-21 side, an excellent 2001/02 season at Groningen saw Hoogstrate earn a five-year contract at PSV. Regarded as one of the finest young players in the Netherlands, PSV have promised to be patient and wait for Hoogstrate to overcome his problems before inviting him back to play.

'Professional treatment'
"PSV have been informed correctly by FC Groningen regarding the health of Jordi Hoogstrate," read an official statement. "After deliberation between the medical staffs of FC Groningen and PSV an agreement has been reached about the steps to take in the professional treatment of the player.

Patient approach
"PSV will give Jordi Hoogstrate all the time he needs for his recovery and will wait for the player, so he can join the PSV first-team squad," the statement continued. "PSV had already decided to add him to the Guus Hiddink's squad for the 2003/04 season. We hope that Jordi will be able to work on his recovery in peace. In the interest of the player and his full recovery, PSV will not give further comment on this matter."
