Netherlands round-up: Title triumph for PSV

Members

Guus Hiddink's PSV Eindhoven claimed the Eredivisie title with a 0-0 draw at FC Groningen on the final day.

Hiddink's fourth title
The result assured Groningen's place in the Eredivisie for next season and in the second half neither team threatened the opposition goal as if an unspoken agreement had been made. It is the fourth league title for coach Guus Hiddink at PSV, following three successes in his first spell there in the late 1980s. AFC Ajax sealed second place and a berth in next season's UEFA Champions League with a 3-0 home win against SC Heerenveen.

Consolation for Ajax
Victor Sikora (2) and Cristian Chivu scored as Richard Witschge and Aron Winter marked their farewell match with a win. Ronald Koeman, coach of the deposed champions, said: "We've qualified for the qualifying round of the Champions League, and that is also a prize."

Feyenoord finish third
With PSV on 84 points and Ajax on 83, Feyenoord finished third with 80 points after a 3-1 home victory over Roda JC. Coach Bert van Maarwijk chose to rest the likes of Pierre van Hooijdonk with Sunday's Dutch Cup final in mind, but they still won comfortably, Bonaventure Kalou, Robin van Persie and substitute Thomas Buffel scoring.

Roda miss out
Roda's defeat meant they fell from fourth to sixth place and now need Feyenoord to beat FC Utrecht in the cup final if they are to earn a UEFA Cup place for next term. Utrecht warmed up for the final with a 3-2 win against FC Twente.

Europe-bound
NAC Breda finished fourth to secure their first ever UEFA Cup place by winning 2-1 at neighbours RBC Roosendaal through goals from Arne Slot and Kevin Bobson. NEC Nijmegen will also play in Europe - for the first time in 20 years - after a dramatic 1-0 win at RKC Waalwijk. Jarda Simr scored an injury-time goal to earn them fifth place.

De Graafschap relegated
At the bottom of the table, De Graafschap were relegated after a 2-1 defeat at FC Zwolle. Their frustrations told when coach Peter Bosz and defender Rene Bot were both shown red cards in the final ten minutes. Zwolle, meanwhile, now face the promotion/relegation play-offs after finishing 16th.

Excelsior hang on
The same applies to 17th-placed SC Excelsior, beaten 4-1 at AZ Alkmaar. The Rotterdam club only avoided automatic relegation thanks to their superior goal difference over De Graafschap. SBV Vitesse secured their top-flight status with a 2-0 win at home to Willem II, thanks to an own goal from Mourad and Matthew Amoah's late strike.

Play-offs
There are eight sides in the play-offs - six from the second division - and they are split into two groups of four, with the top team in each section securing a place in the top flight for next season.
