Austria close in on double

Bundesliga champions FK Austria Wien will take on FC Kärnten in the Austrian Cup final on 1 June.

Only FC Kärnten stand in the way of FK Austria Wien's bid for a domestic double after both won their way through to the Austrian Cup final.

Champions triumph
Bundesliga champions Austria won 1-0 at SV Austria Salzburg, who ended the game down to nine men, to claim their place at Graz's Arnold-Schwarzenegger-Stadium on 1 June.

Own goal decisive
A sell-out 17,000 crowd at Salzburg's new Wals-Siezenheim stadium saw Thomas Eder head into his own net from an Austria corner on 36 minutes to ultimately decide the game. Salzburg pressed hard, but their cause was weakened when Thomas Winkelhofer was dismissed on 55 minutes, and destroyed when Roman Szewczyk followed him in added time.

'A real cup match'
After the game, Austria coach Christoph Daum said: "It was a real cup match as both teams fought hard and created many opportunities to score. It gives us extra pleasure that we are the first team to win a match in Salzburg's new ground."

Second final
While Austria will be bidding for their 23rd win in 32 final appearances, Kärnten have reached that stage for only the second time after beating second division SV Mattersburg 4-0.

Ambrosius scores twice
The 2001 Cup winners took the lead in the 27th minute through Thomas Ambrosius, and he struck again seven minutes later. Patrick Jovanovic made it 3-0 on 76 minutes and Stanko Bubalo competed the scoring in added time.

'Scoreline flatters us'
Kärnten coach Hannes Haubitz, whose team will now enter the UEFA Cup with Austria in the UEFA Champions League, said: "The 4-0 scoreline flatters us, but we were the more mature team and managed to use our chances in excellent fashion."
