Article body
Southampton FC have released Kevin Davies five years after selling the striker to Blackburn Rovers FC for a club record transfer fee of €10 million.
One start
The 26-year-old forward, who rejoined the Premiership side from Blackburn in 1999, made only one first-team start this season and was omitted from the squad for the 1-0 FA Cup final defeat by Arsenal FC last week.
'Happy at the club'
"The way things have worked out is very disappointing as I have been very happy here," Davies said. "I did not want to leave but the writing has been on the wall almost since day one. It has been the same for me all year. The manager has not given me a reason but it is up to me to bounce back."
Future options
"I have a few irons in the fire and I am confident in my own ability," he continued. "I will bounce back somewhere. I would like to have stayed and I have nothing against the club or the fans who have been brilliant. I have heard a few whispers about Sheffield United [FC] but there is nothing definite. I will have a holiday and see what happens."
