Iriondo takes over
Benítez, a 49-year-old Paraguayan, had been at the club since January when he replaced Fernando Vázquez. Antonio Iriondo, formerly in charge of Rayo's B team, has been handed the reins until the end of the season, in which time he must try to save the Madrid club from relegation.
'Nine finals'
"We must renew the team and try to be self-confident," Iriondo said. "We will play nine finals and we can only have victories. We will try to play well and also win. I always try to play attacking football."
Three points adrift
Rayo are three points adrift at the foot of the table after their 1-1 home draw yesterday against Athletic Club Bilbao. In Benítez's ten games in charge, Rayo won just twice.
