Fenerbahçe SK have accepted the resignation of coach Oguz Çetin and promoted Tamer Güney in his place.

Fenerbahçe SK have accepted the resignation of coach Oguz Çetin after a board meeting last night and promoted youth coach Tamer Güney to replace him.

Derby defeat
The club have not won for more than a month, having suffered surprise defeats at the hands of Altay GK and Adanaspor AS, in addition to losing in the derby against rivals Galatasaray SK. Çetin had been in charge of Fenerbahçe since the departure of German coach Werner Lorant, who left in December.

UEFA Cup hope
Club spokesman Atilla Kiyat said it was a unanimous decision to accept Çetin's resignation, adding that Güney, the club's youth development co-ordinator, would be assisted by a technical staff. The new coach will hope to lift fifth-placed Fenerbahçe, who have picked up 43 points, into contention for a UEFA Cup place next season.

Points needed
The UEFA Champions League is almost certainly out of reach with the excellent form of leaders Besiktas and second-placed Galatasaray. However, Güney will have an instant chance to make up ground on third-placed Gençlerbirligi, who have a 16-point advantage, when the two teams meet on Sunday. Trabzonspor are fourth in the standings, two points ahead of Fenerbahçe.
