Malta round-up: Pietà edge thriller

Members

Pietà Hotspurs FC beat Marsaxlokk FC 3-2 to consolidate fifth place in the championship pool.

Woods on target
Marsaxlokk were reduced to ten men in the third minute, when defender Kurt Farrugia was sent off for fouling Ivan Woods in the area. Woods dusted himself down to convert the resulting spot-kick, but Marsaxlokk were level through Digger Okonkwo's own goal two minutes later.

Barbara penalty
Pietà regained the initiative five minutes into the second half with a Giacomo Paniccia goal, only for Okonkwo to handle in the area. Etienne Barbara levelled from the penalty spot but Pietà took the lead for the third and final time when Jamie Pace's shot was deflected in by Pierre Grima 25 minutes from time.

Hope for Mosta
In the night's other game, Mosta FC can still avoid losing Premier League status after holding Floriana FC in relegation pool match.

Gvazava goal
With Congolese defender Gango Rtsa back from injury, Floriana dominated the first-half, but were unable to find away past the Mosta defence. Floriana finally went ahead on 54 minutes, when Georgian striker Grigol Gvazava burst past Brian Agius and shot past Mosta goalkeeper Simon Agius.

Three to play
However, eleven minutes later Mosta were level, as defender Cedric Caruana felled Carlos Camenzuli and Jurandy da Silva made no mistake with his penalty. Mosta, who have three games left to play, are now within six points of third-placed Marsa FC. Floriana still lead the group, level on points with Hamrun Spartans FC and one ahead of Marsa.
