Multi-purpose arena
Espanyol president Daniel Sánchez Llibre today signed an agreement with the local authorities allowing the Primera División club to start work on a new, multi-purpose arena in the area between the Cornellá and El Prat de Llobregat districts.
Shops and restaurants
"The plan is to start work in July and have everything finished by the start of 2005," Sánchez Llibre said. The football stadium is part of a larger project for the site which will include commercial and leisure elements such as shops and restaurants.
Debt to fans
"This is a dream come true," the Espanyol chief said. "We have spent the last two years attending meetings to get this project off the ground." Espanyol left their original Sarriá ground in 1997, moving as tenants to Barcelona's Olympic Stadium at Montjuic. "Even the homeless can aspire to be happy," Sánchez Llibre added. "We owed it to our fans to deliver a stadium."
