Téllez tackles weight problem

Members

Deportivo Alavés defender Óscar Téllez is to follow a special training regime in a bid to lose weight.

Fitness programme
Téllez, 27, was dropped from the squad for Sunday's home game against Villarreal CF - a 1-0 victory - and has subsequently begun work on a fitness programme which will keep him out of the first team for a month.

Weight gain
Alavés coach Miguel Angel Esnal 'Mané' said he wanted to "cure the problems the player is suffering from and get him back [to fitness]". Téllez is believed to have a problem with his metabolism, causing him to gain weight. The former Valencia CF and Villarreal CF centre-half faces an intensive training schedule of up to three sessions a day, designed to restore him to the condition he was in last season when he was capped by Spain.

Metabolic problem
"The player is not in the form we would want him to be in," Mané said. "There is a metabolic problem so we are looking at increasing the amount of training he can do. We are all going to try and help him get back to his best. We have set aside the next month to do this and we hope it will be enough."
