Leading roles
Ionescu was at various times a player, coach, journalist and publicist as well as holding a number of leading administrative roles, helping to develop Romanian football regulations, and writing several influential books.
Successful football school
He was also heavily involved in the foundation of the Bucharest-based Luceafarul football school, which went on to produce the likes of Gheorghe Hagi, Gheorghe Popescu, Ovidiu Sabau, Dan Petrescu, Dorin Mateut and Gavril Balint.
