Article body
Motherwell FC eased their relegation fears and dented Dunfermline Athletic FC's UEFA Cup ambitions with a 2-1 win at Fir Park on Wednesday night.
Pearson on target
On a heavily sanded pitch, Motherwell went ahead on 19 minutes when Scotland Under-21 midfield player Stephen Pearson rose to score with an accurate header. Terry Butcher's side doubled their advantage five minutes after half-time when Steven Craig scored his first goal in senior football.
Motherwell hang on
Fourth-placed Dunfermline were forced to chase the game and pulled a goal back through Stevie Crawford, his 17th of the season, on 52 minutes. That set up a tense finale, but Motherwell were able to hang on for the win.
Safety in sight
The victory takes Motherwell three points clear of the bottom side, Dundee United FC, while Jimmy Calderwood's Dunfermline remain seven points adrift of Heart of Midlothian FC in the race for the only certain UEFA Cup berth guaranteed by league placings.
