Serie A leaders Milan started well and dominated the early stages before Perugia came back into the game. It was the hosts who had the best chance but Massimiliano Fusano flashed a close-range effort over the bar from Fabrizio Miccoli's left-wing cross. The second leg takes place at the San Siro next month. AS Roma won 2-1 against city rivals S.S. Lazio in Wednesday's semi-final first-leg tie.
