Regulars rested
Coach Sergio Markarian rested several first-teamers ahead of Sunday's game against AEK Athens FC and paid the price. The only goal came in the 84th minute when Anestis Agritis launched a counterattack and Panathinaikos goalkeeper Stephanos Kotsolis dashed outside his area to try and tackle him only for Agritis to nudge the ball to Giannis Hloros who drove into an empty net.
AEK held
In the night's other tie, Panionios GS and AEK drew 1-1. AEK were the better side during the first half and duly took the lead in the 40th minute through Christos Maladenis. However, Panionios were rewarded for their persistence with an 87th-minute equaliser from Vangelis Mantzios who headed past AEK's substitute goalkeeper Chrisostomos Mihailidis. Dionisios Chiotis, AEK's first-choice goalkeeper, injured his ribs during the first half and will probably miss Sunday's showdown against Panathinaikos.
Other ties
Both second-leg matches will be played on 3 March. The third quarter-final between FC PAOK Thessaloniki and Olympiakos Piraeus FC takes place on 26 February and 12 March while Aris Thessaloniki FC meet Ethnikos Asteras FC on 19 February and 19 March.
