Article summary
The Spanish Football Federation has provisionally suspended Athletic Club Bilbao's Carlos Gurpegi.
Article body
Season opener
Gurpegi gave the positive test following the opening game of the 2002/03 campaign against Primera División leaders Real Sociedad. A subsequent test in December confirmed the findings, though the 22-year-old has denied taking any banned substance.
Bilbao appeal
Athletic intend to appeal against the decision, the first action of its kind taken by the RFEF's new disciplinary committee following the resignation of the previous three-man panel earlier this week.
RFEF stance
The RFEF said in a statement: "For his own good, the good of his club, the good of Spanish football and the good of sport a player under suspicion of this type cannot continue to compete until he is exonerated or until a sanction is decided."
