Republic of Ireland round-up: Drogheda stay in touch

Members

Drogheda United FC upset Shelbourne FC to maintain their hopes of avoiding a relegation play-off.

Irish Premier Division champions Bohemian FC lost 1-0 to Longford Town FC tonight.

Ferguson winner
A 68th-minute penalty from Longford defender Barry Ferguson was enough to give the home side maximum points in a game of little relevance to either side. The same could not be said of Monday's match between Drogheda United FC and Shelbourne FC, however.

Relegation play-off
Drogheda beat the second-placed side 1-0 to maintain their slim hopes of avoiding a relegation play-off. Despite having striker Declan O'Brien sent off after 47 minutes, Drogheda managed to take the lead six minutes later when Andy Myler converted from the penalty spot after Jim Crawford felled Stuart Taylor.

Severe pressure
Drogheda were under severe pressure for the final third of the match but somehow managed to hold on for a crucial three points. The result means that they need to win this Sunday against Saint Patrick's Athletic FC and hope that Derry City FC and University College Dublin FC fail to win their respective games against Bohemian FC and Cork City FC.
