Bachraty back at Spartak

Slovakian club FC Spartak Trnava have named former incumbent Jozef Bachraty as their new president.

Slovakian First League challengers FC Spartak Trnava have named former incumbent Jozef Bachraty as their new president.

Pipped to the title
Bacharty presided over the club in the 1990s, but relinquished the coveted position after Spartak were pipped to the championship by 1. FC Košice in both the 1996/97 and 1997/98 seasons.

'Never say never'
Speaking after he stood down, however, Bacharty said "you can never say never", and his words have rung true after he was drafted in to replace former president Ivan Lipovsky, who recently retired due to ill health.

Recent renaissance
Semi-finalists in the 1969 European Champion Clubs' Cup, where they lost 3-2 on aggregate to AFC Ajax, Spartak are enjoying something of a renaissance this season following promotion to the top flight last term.

Second in the table
The club are second in the Slovakian standings, eight points behind leaders ŠK Slovan Bratislava, yet Bachraty's chief concern is not to win the title. His first task will be to streamline the playing staff as Spartak have 40 professionals on their books.
