Article body
'Differences of opinion'
In a formal statement, Castells said that "differences of opinion over the running of the club" had made his position untenable. The move is the latest setback for Barcelona, whose lowly position in the Spanish Primera División has put pressure on both Gaspart and Louis van Gaal, the Catalan team's coach.
Presidential elections
Castells, the director in charge of the club's financial department, became the second Barcelona vice-president to stand down this season, and the fifth since Gaspart took office two and a half years ago. Eight directors immediately tendered their resignations in support of Castells, who had wanted Gaspart to bring forward to March presidential elections set for the summer.
