Untried coach
Brogno, who like his predecessor is untried as a coach in the Eerste Klasse, retired as a Charleroi player at the end of the 2000/01 season after 15 years with Les Zèbres. He was subsequently appointed assistant to then Charleroi coach Enzo Scifo but lasted less than a year in the role after the pair fell out.
Fans' favourite
Charleroi president Abbas Bayat is hoping the 36-year-old Brogno - chosen when media attention was focused on names like Robert Waseige, Luka Peruzovic and Georges Leekens - will give the club a much-needed lift. Brogno, whose brother Tony plays for KVC Westerlo, was such a favourite in his days as striker and captain at the Communal stadium that his No11 shirt was retired when his playing days ended.
Rock bottom
Charleroi certainly need an immediate impact from Brogno, as they sit bottom of the Belgian first division without a win after 12 matches. Under caretaker coaches Khalid Karama and Mario Notario they suffered their eighth defeat of the campaign on Saturday when they went down 4-1 at Sporting Lokeren St-Niklaas Waasland.
'We hope for the best'
The club's secretary Pierre-Yves Hendrickx said of Brogno, who has been working in Charleroi's commercial and PR departments: "It was obvious that it was not his cup of tea. Dante never hid that he wanted to become a full-time coach one day and even if he was very quiet lately, he was hungry to get back working with the team. Now Dante has accepted the challenge and we hope for the best."
