Belgium round-up: Lierse pile on pressure

K. Lierse SK moved to within two points of top spot after a hard-fought 2-1 win at RSC Anderlecht.

K. Lierse SK moved to within two points of Eerste Klasse leaders Club Brugge KV after a 2-1 win at RSC Anderlecht on Monday.

Pressure on
The home side started brightly only for Lierse to grab a shock 21st-minute lead, Marc Schaessens firing in a fierce shot after being released by Aruna Kone. Ki-Hyeon Seol equalised nine minutes later before Stein Huysegems' late strike handed sixth-placed Anderlecht their first home defeat of the season.

Late winner
That win came two days after a last-minute own goal by R. AEC Mons goalkeeper Gregory Delwarte had handed Brugge a 2-1 win. Brugge took the lead through defender Olivier de Cock but newly promoted Mons were thrown a late lifeline when Cedric Roussel stabbed in the equaliser. Then came Delwarte's flap from a corner which handed all three points to the visitors.

Genk held
KRC Genk lost more ground on Sunday after being held to a 1-1 home draw by struggling KVC Westerlo. Marc Wagenmakers cancelled out Wesley Sonck's early opener to leave Genk in fourth place.

Derby joy
R. Antwerp FC fought their way back from 3-0 down to win 5-3 against KFC Germinal Beerschot Antwerpen. Three goals down inside 26 minutes, Germinal hit back through Patrick Goots, Harald Pinxten, Ibrahim Yattara and Omar Mussa (2), and move up to eleventh place.

Bottom battle
Cash-strapped KV Mechelen suffered their sixth defeat in eleven matches after going down 2-0 at home to fellow strugglers KSK Beveren. Steven Wostijn and Gneri Yaya Touré scored for the visitors.

Highflyers stopped
Third-placed Sporting Lokeren St-Niklaas Waasland were held 1-1 by R. Excelsior Mouscron on Saturday, Davy de Beule levelling after Polish striker Marcin Zewlakow's early goal for Lokeren. High-flying K. Sint Truidense VV also drew, 2-2 at R. Charleroi SC, who remain rooted to the bottom of the table. The visitors fought back from two goals down, with strikes from Bram Vangeel and Danny Boffin.

New Standard
In Saturday's other games, R. Standard de Liège defeated RAA Louviéroise 1-0 and KAA Gent recorded a 3-1 home victory over KFC Lommelse SK.
