Middlesbrough FC defeated Bolton Wanderers FC 2-0 to stay third, while Newcastle United FC won.

Middlesbrough FC continued their impressive start to the season today as they defeated Bolton Wanderers FC 2-0 at the Riverside stadium to consolidate their position in third place in the Premiership.

Headed first goal
The home side are brimming with confidence at the moment, and Cameroon international Geremi’s 23rd-minute corner was headed into the Bolton goal by central defender Ugo Ehiogu to give the home side a deserved lead. Middlesbrough created several chances to further extend their advantage, but had to be satisfied with a one-goal lead at half-time.

Geremi scores again
The second half followed a similar pattern to the first, with Middlesbrough in control but Bolton looked dangerous on the break and were always in the game while it remained 1-0. However, Geremi's second goal in successive weeks effectively ended the game, as he ran on to Alen Boksic’s pass in the 68th minute before sliding the ball past the Bolton goalkeeper.

Flying high
Middlesbrough now have 17 points, and are just a single point behind second-placed Liverpool FC, who entertain Chelsea FC tomorrow. Bolton drop to third-from-bottom.

Shearer scores twice
There was more success for the North-East as UEFA Champions League participants Newcastle United FC held off a spirited challenge from West Bromwich Albion FC at St. James’ Park to secure a 2-1 win, although they had to come from behind as Igor Balis gave the away side a surprise lead. However, Alan Shearer equalised from a free-kick on the stroke of half-time, and it was the former England captain who got what proved to be the winning goal midway through the second half.

West Ham stay bottom
West Ham United FC’s mixed recent fortunes continued as they were defeated 2-1 at home by Birmingham City FC. Striker Stern John scored twice for the away side as they secured another impressive win. Joe Cole’s goal was not enough for West Ham, who remain bottom of the league.

Southampton see off City
Southampton FC, who were third-from-bottom at the start of play, moved up five places as they defeated Manchester City FC 2-0. Brett Ormerod scored twice for the home side, who had substitute Marian Pahars sent off for two bookable offences late in the game.
