Cup triumph for Derry

Derry City FC beat Shamrock Rovers FC to win the FAI Cup - as David Kelly ended his playing career.

Former Irish international David Kelly ended his 16-year playing career on a winning note as he helped Derry City FC beat Shamrock Rovers FC in the final of the FAI Cup.

Final match
Kelly, who played in the FIFA World Cup finals with Ireland in 1994, had his last game as a player as he now looks to his new life as assistant manager with English second division club Tranmere Rovers FC.

Coyle the scorer
And 36-year-old Kelly was thankful that Liam Coyle, 34, was alongside him as the striker scored the only goal on 47 minutes to give Derry their only silverware since their 1997 Premier Division championship.

'A lot more to come'
"It was fantastic for Liam," said Derry manager Kevin Mahon. "People had written him off a few years ago but he signed a new two-year contract at the start of this season. And I think there is a lot more to be seen from him.”

'We just didn't play'
Rovers boss Liam Buckley admitted: "I was disappointed that we just didn't play, we didn't string any passes together in any sort of pattern as I wanted us to do and as we have been doing in the past while. We played much better in recent weeks than we did yesterday, but for some reason the game passed one or two of our players by. These things happen."
