Portugal round-up: Jardel back

End of exile
The Brazilian striker made his first appearance of the campaign, having ended his self-imposed exile to return to training with Sporting last week.

Back from suspension
Jardel, last season's European Golden Shoe winner with 42 goals, failed to register as Vitaly Kutuzov and 17-year-old Cristiano Ronaldo took the scoring honours, the latter with a brace. The win lifted the champions into seventh place. Sporting had suspended Jardel without pay after he failed to report back to the club after the summer break, claiming he was depressed.

Porto on top
Elsewhere, a 1-1 draw at SC Beira-Mar was enough to keep FC Porto top of the I. Divisão. Ricardo Sousa came back to haunt his old club with a 64th-minute equaliser after Derlei had put the visitors ahead. Sousa, son of Beira Mar coach António Sousa, struck a superb free-kick to deny Porto on a ground where they have failed to win in three attempts.

Romeu leads rout
Vitória Guimarães moved to within a point of the leaders after a 5-0 win over CD Santa Clara. Striker Romeu capped another fine attacking display by the home side with two goals, while Nuno Assis, Hugo Cunha and Ivan Djurdjevic were also on target.

Setúbal surprise
SL Benfica joined Guimarães on 13 points but were left to rue a missed opportunity as Vitória Setúbal nicked a 1-1 draw in Lisbon. Setúbal's Jorginho shocked Benfica with an 85th-minute equaliser after the Eagles had led through Petit's 70th-minute free-kick.

Belenenses win
Lisbon's third team, CF Os Belenenses kept pace with their famous neighbours by defeating SC Braga 3-2. Forward Henri Antchouet, who played for Leixões SC in the UEFA Cup qualifying round, was the hero with a hat-trick. Braga, who had recalled Portuguese international Quim in goal, scored through Wender and José Barroso but never threatened the home side.

Barcelos draw
João Armando's equaliser in Barcelos earned FC Paços de Ferreira a 1-1 draw against Gil Vicente FC, who had gone ahead through Luís Loureiro's goal. CS Marítimo striker Gaúcho scored both his team's goals in the 2-1 home success against bottom club Clube Académica de Coimbra, for whom Lucas grabbed a consolation. Finally, Yves Kibuey's solitary strike edged UD Leiria past CD Nacional.
