German club 1. FC Kaiserslautern have appointed Eric Gerets as their new coach after the sacking of Andreas Brehme last week.
Two-year contract
Gerets, who guided PSV Eindhoven to the Dutch title in 1999/00 and 2000/01, takes over a Kaiserslautern side who have taken just one point from their first three games of the season. The 48-year-old coach has signed a two-year contract at the Fritz-Walter-Stadion.
Replaced by Hiddink
He left PSV at the end of last season after failing to land a hat-trick of titles, finishing five points behind champions AFC Ajax. Former Korean Republic coach Guus Hiddink has replaced Gerets at PSV.
European glory
Gerets won 86 caps for Belgium from 1975-91 and picked up a runners-up medal in the 1980 UEFA European Championship, as well as representing his country at the 1982, 1986 and 1990 FIFA World Cups. His club career included spells at R. Standard de Liège, Milan AC and PSV, the club he captained to European Champions Clubs' Cup victory in 1988.
