Portugal round-up: Benfica march on

Sabrosa treat
Portuguese international Simão Sabrosa was the hero with two second-half goals. The former FC Barcelona player converted a 52nd-minute penalty after a foul by Renato on Nuno Gomes, before settling the issue with a late free-kick.

Leiria leveller
Visitors Leiria had surprised the home side five minutes before half-time, when a Márcio Santos header cancelled out Nuno Gomes's 23rd-minute opener.

Porto in second
Meanwhile, FC Porto moved into second place with a 2-0 away success at previous joint leaders Vitória Guimarães. Playmaker Deco registered with a 47th-minute free-kick before substitute Tiago sealed the points after good work by Hélder Postiga. José Mourinho's side had taken control following the sending-off on 40 minutes of Guimarães's Rafael.

Sporting held 
League and cup holders Sporting Clube de Portugal failed to put the defeats by FC Paços de Ferreira and FK Partizan behind them as they struggled to a 0-0 home draw with Varzim SC. The stalemate underlined coach Laszlo Bölöni's need for a new striker, with Mário Jardel no closer to settling his differences with the club despite being back in Lisbon for talks this week.

Belenenses boost
CF Os Belenenses succeeded where their famous neighbours had failed, defeating Paços 1-0 in Lisbon courtesy of Eduardo Marques's fine strike from 25 metres. The Restelo club climbed into fifth position, one above Boavista FC who edged past CD Santa Clara with a 57th-minute goal from Silva.

Barroso lifts Braga
SC Braga suffered to beat newly-promoted Moreirense FC 2-1 with José Barroso scoring twice, while Alex was on target for the visitors.

Setúbal romp to victory
The big surprise of the round came from Madeira, where CS Marítimo were thumped 5-0 at home by Vitória Setúbal. Rui Lima, Sandro and Marco Ferreira gave the away team a flying start before Jorginho and Albert Meyong compounded the local misery in the second half.

Nacional power
The other island team, newly-promoted CD Nacional went to Aveiro and overcame SC Beira-Mar 2-0, with goals either side of half-time from Serginho.

Coimbra make point
Finally, Gil Vicente FC and Clube Académica de Coimbra drew 1-1, Tonel's last-minute equaliser earning Coimbra their first point of the season after Paulo Alves had put the hosts ahead.
