Article body
The new headquarters of the Georgian Football Federation (GFF) has come under fire from unidentified gunmen.
'No justification'
At 8pm on Friday, shots were fired at second-floor windows before the perpetrators abandoned the scene. GFF president Merab Zhordania told uefa.com: "I thought we had built an office which everybody would take care of, as if it was a baby. It is very difficult to comment. It has no justification".
Sponsored by UEFA
The construction of the offices was sponsored by European football's governing body and opened by UEFA President Lennart Johansson on 20 August. Four days later, the fifth Congress of the GFF elected Zhordania as the president for second term. However, federation officials and personnel are yet to move into the building.
Police chief comments
Gogi Nebieridze, Tbilisi's regional police chief, suggested the gunfire may not have been deliberately targetted. He said: "Two cartridges had been found at the scene. The inquiry will clarify everything. Maybe this shooting was accidental and not a planned crime."
Past accidents
This is not the first time that the federation has been hit by crime. In October, 1999, Zhordania suffered serious head injuries after being attacked in his federation office, and the following year unidentified criminals stole some €42,800 from the then GFF headquarters.
