Portugal round-up: Setúbal surprise Boavista

The Portuguese season began on with a draw between Vitória Setúbal Boavista FC.

The new Portuguese Super Liga season began tonight as Vitória Setúbal fought out a 1-1 draw with UEFA Champions League hopefuls Boavista FC.

First opportunity
The first goalscoring opportunity of the game fell to Setúbal's Jorginho in the 25th minute. The Brazilian forward produced some sublime trickery before he saw his 18-metre shot palmed over the crossbar by Boavista goalkeeper Ricardo.

Hosts go behind
Five minutes later the hosts were behind when Brazilian striker Luiz Cláudio rose to the occasion and headed into the net after countryman Duda crossed from the right.

Setúbal level

Late save
The second half was something of an anticlimax, with no further goals and little goalmouth action. However, deep into injury time Setúbal goalkeeper Pedro Espinha was forced into a great save from a header by Boavista defender Éder.

Champions League challenge
Boavista, who finished second in the league last season, will next week attempt to recover from a 1-0 first-leg deficit when they travel to face AJ Auxerre in their Champions League third qualifying round second-leg match.
