Germany round-up: Bremen bounce back

SV Werder Bremen showed improved spirit to defeat Hamburger SV 2-1 in the 1. Bundesliga.

SV Werder Bremen bounced back from their disappointing performance in the 1. Bundesliga last weekend to beat Hamburger SV 2-1 on Sunday.

Spirit willing
Bremen lost 3-0 to newly-promoted DSC Arminia Bielefeld a week ago but showed the spirit lacking in that game against a resilient Hamburg side, grabbing a second-half winner through midfield player Holger Wehlage.

Well-placed shot
Angelos Charisteas struck the first goal for Bremen with a well-placed shot into the far corner but Tomás Ujfalusi equalised for the visitors when he found space in the centre to head in a corner from Martin Groth.

Pieckenhagen clanger
Bremen were back ahead six minutes after the break following a massive error from Hamburg goalkeeper Martin Pieckenhagen, who let Wehlage's mis-hit shot trickle through his legs.

First win
In the only other game of the day, VfL Wolfsburg, who signed former German international Stefan Effenberg from FC Bayern München on Friday, collected their first win of the season against VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach, Martin Petrov scoring the decisive goal.
