Swedish international Pontus Kåmark seems set to retire from football due to his injured knee.

Swedish international Pontus Kåmark seems set to retire from football after accepting he is unlikely to recover fully from his recurring knee injury, which also kept him out of the EURO 2000™ finals.

Operation not enough
IFK Göteborg defender Kåmark, capped 57 times by his country, has been told that even an operation may not save his career, which has included spells with Västerås SK, Leicester City FC and AIK Solna. He rejoined Göteborg last year, having previously been with them from 1989-95.

'Doesn't look good at all'
Kåmark's club doctor, Leif Swärd, admitted: "Well, it doesn't look good at all. His right knee has taken a lot of damage over the years and even though an operation might get him back on the pitch, it's far from a certainty. I know people who have had the same type of injury and have been unable to go out jogging after their career. It's not worth it"

'Something has been missing'
Although Kåmark will speak to Swärd and Göteborg before making a final decision, the 33-year-old full-back believes that his time may be over: "I have tried to get back for a long period now and even though it's been OK from time to time, I've felt that something has been missing. I guess this explains why. Age is, of course, taking its toll and if I was younger it would probably be easier to try and get back".

'A wonderful time'
However, he is not disheartened by the disappointing way his career appears to be ending. "I've experienced so much already and I've had a wonderful time. If I was younger it would be a much harder blow." Kåmark was part of the Swedish squad that finished third in the 1994 FIFA World Cup.
