Golden Shoe: Hubner second after last-day double

Members

Mario Jardel signed off with two more goals, as did second-placed Dario Hubner of Piacenza FC.

Brazilian double
The Brazilian's double ensured that champions Sporting Clube de Portugal beat SC Beira-Mar 2-1 and gave Europe's leading marksman an incredible 42 goals this season.

Trezeguet's opener
With most of Europe's leading leagues coming to a conclusion over the weekend Jardel finished the race for the coveted award on 63 points - 15 ahead of Juventus FC's David Trezeguet and Dario Hubner of Piacenza FC both of whom found the net on Sunday to move up to joint-second. Trezeguet scored the first goal in Juventus's title-clinching 2-0 win at Udinese Calcio as favourites Internazionale FC lost 4-2 at S.S. Lazio to hand the Turin club the league.

Hubner adds two more
Hubner scored twice to join Trezeguet on 24 Serie A goals for the season as Piacenza condemned Hellas-Verona FC to relegation with a 3-0 victory. It has been a fantastic personal effort from Hubner this term as he has scored just under half of Piacenza's 49 goals during a difficult season where they finished three points above the relegation zone.

Vieri goal in vain
Another climber in Italy was Christian Vieri who moved up three places to joint-eighth after scoring once for Inter but it will be of little consolation after the cruel way his team lost out on the league.

Cissé adds to pedigree
In France, the sought-after Djibril Cissé of AJ Auxerre bagged two more goals to join Vieri on 44 points despite his team losing 3-2 at home to Stade Rennais FC while Wesley Sonk's 30th goal this season for the Belgian Jupiler League champions KRC Genk in their 3-3 draw with Sporting Lokeren St-Niklaas Waasland kept him in the top ten on 45 points.

Season still running in England
With the majority of strikers around Europe having kicked their last ball for the season it is only the leading scorers in the English FA Premiership who can affect the Golden Shoe standings. On Wednesday Arsenal FC travel to Manchester United FC needing a point to win the title and both Arsenal's Thierry Henry and United's Ruud Van Nistelrooij can climb the standings with goals then or in their respective games on the final day of the season on Saturday.

Injury for Hasselbaink
Chelsea FC's Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink - level with Van Nistelrooij in fifth place - is unlikely to get the chance to improve his position after being forced off during Saturday's FA Cup final defeat by Arsenal. However, Newcastle United FC's Alan Shearer - level with Henry, Vieri and Cissé in eighth place - can climb should he score past his first club Southampton FC.

  • Only the leading five countries (Spain, Italy, Germany, France and England) on the UEFA Ranking after the 2000/01 season have 2 as their multiplier. This is to emphasise the difference in (international) performance level between the clubs from those countries and those from the other countries.
  • In a change from last season, a player cannot first play in a summer league (e.g. Norway) and then in a winter league (e.g. Spain) and combine the points total for each season. For example, last season John Carew played for Rosenborg BK and then moved to Valencia CF for the start of the Spanish season. From this season, he would have had two separate rankings.
