Portugal round-up: Boavista claim Champions League spot

Members

Boavista FC and FC Porto secured places in the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Cup respectively.

Boavista FC claimed Portugal's second UEFA Champions League spot by securing second place in the 1. Liga with a 4-1 win over Vitória Setúbal today.

Big win
Petit's 25th-minute opener was cancelled out in the 39th minute by Hugo Henrique's strike for the visitors. However, Nuno Frechaut restored Boavista's lead before the interval and then Alexandre Goulart and Martelinho wrapped up the points in the latter stages of the second half.

Great relief
Goals either side of half-time put third-placed FC Porto into next year's UEFA Cup after they overcame FC Paços de Ferreira 2-1. Goals from Deco and Benni McCarthy were too much for the home side, who had levelled the scores at 1-1 through Leonardo.

Benfica's woe
For the second consecutive season SL Benfica were denied a place in Europe after they were beaten 3-2 by CS Marítimo. Pedro Mantorras twice gave Benfica the lead, but an Eric Gaúcho double, the second from the penalty spot, and a Daniel Kenedy goal denied the Lisbon side.

Jardel double
Champions Sporting Clube de Portugal beat SC Beira-Mar 2-1 thanks to two more goals from Europe's leading marksman Mário Jardel - the Brazilian's 41st and 42nd strikes of a prolific season. Fary Faye scored from the penalty spot for the visitors.

Going down
At the other end of the table SC Salgueiros, SC Farense and FC Alverca were all relegated, despite the first two both winning their final games. Salgueiros managed to overcome Varzim SC 2-1 thanks to a last-minute goal from striker Toy, while Carlos Costa scored the winner as Farense fought back from two goals down against Gil Vicente FC, to win 3-2.

Five star
Five goals from SC Braga's Brazilian striker Barata sank rock-bottom FC Alverca, although the visitors did manage to pull three goals back in the final seven minutes of the game. In Sunday's other games, CF Os Belenenses came from behind to beat CD Santa Clara 3-2, while Vitória Guimarães were beaten 4-2 by UD Leiria.
