AIK turn to experienced Czech

AIK Solna have announced that Dusan Uhrin has signed a two-year contract to replace Peter Larsson as coach after he walked out on the club just seven weeks into the job following a disastrous start to the Swedish season.

The 59-year-old Uhrin, who has recently been in charge of Kuwait's national side, is charged with reviving the fortunes of the pre-season Allsvenskan favourites who currently sit third from bottom after seven matches with just one win to their name.

'Long-term solution'
AIK were expected to turn to former coach Olle Nordin as he has made a full recovery from the illness which forced him to relinquish the post for Larsson in mid-March, but chairman Sanny Åslund had no hesitation in appointing Uhrin. "We're extremely pleased to have signed a coach of this calibre who's got the results to prove his abilities," he said. "We wanted a long-term solution and a man who could take AIK into the future."

Impressive career
Uhrin boasts an impressive coaching career which reached its zenith in 1996 when he guided the Czech Republic, his homeland, to the final of the UEFA European Championship. Germany may have triumphed through Oliver Bierhoff's 'golden goal' but Uhrin was voted the Coach of the Tournament by UEFA. He has also been voted Czech coach of the year on five occasions and was in charge of AC Sparta Praha when they were beaten by Milan AC in the semi-finals of the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup in 1972.
