Lobanovskiy in intensive care

FC Dynamo Kyiv coach Valery Lobanovskiy was in intensive care in hospital on Thursday.

The condition of FC Dynamo Kyiv coach Valery Lobanovskiy, who suffered a stroke during Tuesday's 3-1 victory over FC Metalurh Zaporizhzhya, has deteriorated sharply.

Brain haemorrhage
According to Ukrainian television reports yesterday, Lobanovskiy, 63, has been transferred to an intensive care unit in the eastern city of  Zaporizhzhya after suffering a brain haemorrhage. Dynamo vice-president Ihor Surkis is believed to be at Lobanovskiy's side, and the club have flown over his wife from Kyiv.

Poor health
Lobanovskiy, who has a history of poor health, and underwent surgery last year after spending time in hospital with heart trouble in 2000. Local media quoted hospital officials in Zaporizhzhya as saying the long-serving Kiev coach may require an operation to normalise blood flow to the brain.
