Germany round-up: Dortmund take the title

Koller equaliser 
Matthias Sammer's side clinched the championship with a 2-1 home win over SV Werder Bremen sealed by goals from Jan Koller and Ewerthon. The result meant heartbreak for Bayer 04 Leverkusen, who had led the way for much of the season only to let first place slip last weekend. Leverkusen finished with a 2-1 home victory over Hertha BSC Berlin.

Crowd in dreamland 
Dortmund actually went behind in the 17th minute to a Paul Stalteri goal. They battled back three minutes before half-time when Koller found the net from the edge of the penalty area to ease the nerves in the Westfalenstadion. His Brazilian team-mate Ewerthon then sent the home crowd into dreamland with his 74th-minute strike. The 20-year-old had only just come into the action as a substitute, when he tapped home a lofted pass from Dede.

Krstajic sent off 
To make matters worse for Werder, Mladen Krstajic picked up a second yellow card three minutes later to earn a dismissal. That allowed Dortmund to control the rest of the match, and they never looked in danger.

Sammer overjoyed 
"After the final whistle I couldn't let my feelings out at first," said Sammer after Dortmund's first title in six years. "I have great respect for this team who showed real heart and spirit."

Bayern third 
Leverkusen had a narrow win at the BayArena with two goals from Michael Ballack - but it was to prove in vain. Elsewhere, FC Bayern München, who had already sealed third place and entry to the UEFA Champions League, closed with a 3-2 triumph over FC Hansa Rostock. Dortmund finished with 70 points, one more than Leverkusen and two clear of Bayern.

Kaiserslautern miss out 
The other result of interest was 1. FC Kaiserslautern's 4-3 defeat by VfB Stuttgart. Had Kaiserslautern won, they would have pipped Bremen to a UEFA Cup place. Now they must be content with the UEFA Intertoto Cup.

Trio knew their fate 
Hertha and FC Schalke 04 will also play in the UEFA Cup, while Stuttgart and TSV 1860 München will join Kaiserslautern in the Intertoto Cup. The three relegated clubs already knew their fate before today's action. They were 1. FC Köln, FC St. Pauli and SC Freiburg.

Maric double 
The day's other results saw VfL Wolfsburg win 2-1 at Schalke, thanks to a double from Tomislav Maric. Another player finishing on a high, despite his team's demotion, was Köln's Markus Kurth who scored twice as his side beat FC Energie Cottbus 3-2.

High-scoring day 
Finally, VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach went down 4-2 to 1860, Freiburg signed off with a 4-3 success against Hamburger SV, and 1. FC Nürnberg saw off St. Pauli 3-2.
