Golden Shoe: Henry hits top form

Arsenal FC striker Thierry Henry is out on his own as the main threat to Mario Jardel.

Thierry Henry is out on his own as the main threat to Mario Jardel in the race of the European Golden Shoe award.

Closest rival
The Arsenal FC striker's double against Charlton Athletic FC left him as the closest rival to Sporting Clube de Portugal forward Jardel. French international Henry, who scored for his country in last week's 5-0 victory over Scotland, is now just 4.5 points behind the Brazilian. Jardel had a quiet weekend, hitting the woodwork in the 0-0 draw with Boavista FC on Saturday.

Dutch duo drop back
Three more league goals would be enough for Henry to take top spot, unless Jardel adds to his haul. A number of players are bunched together in third place, including Dutch duo Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink and Ruud van Nistelrooij.

Welsh wonder
An unlikely name in the top ten is Marc Lloyd-Williams of Bangor City FC from the League of Wales. He hit a hat-trick in Saturday's 6-3 victory over Cwmbran Town FC to take his tally for the season to 38.

Ballack hits another
Another notable weekend performance came from Bayer 04 Leverkusen's Michael Ballack, who has now scored 15 goals from midfield to join a host of players in 26th place. The German international added to his tally in Saturday's crucial 4-2 win over 1. FC Kaiserslautern.

  • Only the leading five countries (Spain, Italy, Germany, France and England) on the UEFA Ranking after the 2000/01 season have 2 as their multiplier. This is to emphasise the difference in (international) performance level between the clubs from those countries and those from the other countries.
  • In a change from last season, a player cannot first play in a summer league (e.g. Norway) and then in a winter league (e.g. Spain) and combine the points total for each season. For example, last season John Carew played for Rosenborg BK and then moved to Valencia CF for the start of the Spanish season. From this season, he would have had two separate rankings.
