Golden Shoe: Hasselbaink chasing goal glory

Members

Chelsea FC's Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink is the latest striker to challenge Mario Jardel.

Henry leapfrogged
The Chelsea FC forward scored twice in a 3-0 victory over Everton FC in the English FA Premiership on Saturday. The Dutch international toe-poked the opening goal in the 26th minute before adding a second a minute before the interval. The double put him on 46 points and enabled him to leapfrog Arsenal FC striker Thierry Henry into second place behind Jardel.

Time running out
Yet despite Hasselbaink's haul, Sporting Clube de Portugal forward Jardel preserved his advantage with two in the 4-0 defeat of CS Marítimo. The Brazilian has led the way for much of the season and is now 6.5 points ahead.

Four games remain
Both players have four matches left but any goals scored by Hasselbaink will be multiplied by two whereas Jardel's strikes are only multiplied by 1.5 due to the different rating applied to the leagues in England and Portugal.

Three for Larsson
Besides Henry, other contenders who could make a late surge for the award include Italian veteran Dario Hubner who found the net for Piacenza FC to join Henry in third place. Last year's winner Henrik Larsson hit a hat-trick for Scottish champions Celtic FC but may have left it too late to defend his title.

  • Only the leading five countries (Spain, Italy, Germany, France and England) on the UEFA Ranking after the 2000/01 season have 2 as their multiplier. This is to emphasise the difference in (international) performance level between the clubs from those countries and those from the other countries.
  • In a change from last season, a player cannot first play in a summer league (e.g. Norway) and then in a winter league (e.g. Spain) and combine the points total for each season. For example, last season John Carew played for Rosenborg BK and then moved to Valencia CF for the start of the Spanish season. From this season, he would have had two separate rankings.
