Golden Shoe: Lloyd Williams shoots up to second

Members

Marc Lloyd Williams is second in the European Golden Shoe standings but Mario Jardel stays top.

Six goals in his final League of Wales match of the season helped Bangor City FC striker Marc Lloyd Williams rise from tenth place to claim second position in the European Golden Shoe standings.

Record goals total
Although the finish of the Welsh season means Lloyd Williams cannot catch the runaway leader, Mario Jardel of Sporting Clube de Portugal, his double hat-trick against Rhayader Town FC took his season's total to 66 goals, including 47 in the league - a record for the competition.

'A complete one-off'
Bangor manager Peter Davenport said of Lloyd Williams, who has played for English clubs Halifax Town AFC, Stockport County FC and York City FC: "[He is] like nobody I've ever played with or against, or seen before. He's a complete one-off."

Two more for Jardel
Jardel continued his likely march towards claiming the Golden Shoe by scoring two more goals on Saturday at Vitória Setúbal on a weekend where Sporting clinched the Portuguese first division championship.

Tie for third place
The Brazilian is now 13 points clear of Lloyd Williams, with Juventus FC's David Trezeguet sharing third place with Chelsea FC forward Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink and Manchester United FC striker Ruud van Nistelrooij. Trezeguet scored a hat-trick on Sunday against Brescia Calcio to keep his side in the running for the Serie A title.

Shearer in sixth
Former England striker Alan Shearer scored his 22nd goal of the season for Newcastle United FC in Saturday's FA Premiership defeat of West Ham United FC to move up to sixth place, held jointly with Piacenza FC's Dario Hubner and Thierry Henry of Arsenal FC.

  • Only the leading five countries (Spain, Italy, Germany, France and England) on the UEFA Ranking after the 2000/01 season have 2 as their multiplier. This is to emphasise the difference in (international) performance level between the clubs from those countries and those from the other countries.
  • In a change from last season, a player cannot first play in a summer league (e.g. Norway) and then in a winter league (e.g. Spain) and combine the points total for each season. For example, last season John Carew played for Rosenborg BK and then moved to Valencia CF for the start of the Spanish season. From this season, he would have had two separate rankings.
