Rangers FC defender Lorenzo Amoruso is Scottish footballers' choice as player of the year.

Rangers FC defender Lorenzo Amoruso has been voted by Scotland's footballers as their player of the year.

First since 1996
The Italian is the first player from the Glasgow club to win the Scottish Professional Footballers' Association (SPFA) award since Paul Gascoigne in 1996.
 
League Cup honours
Amoruso recently lost the club captaincy, but his responded by producing some excellent form to help his side win the Scottish League Cup. He could add to that honour next Saturday when Rangers play Celtic in the Scottish Cup final.

Award for Lambert
It was also consolation for Amoruso after was runner-up to Celtic's Paul Lambert in a similar poll of Scottish sport writers.

Petrov misses out
Lambert, along with Celtic's Stilian Petrov and Livingston FC player David Fernandez were runners-up to Amoruso in the SPFA vote, topped last year by Henrik Larsson.

Prize for McNaughton
Aberdeen FC's Kevin McNaughton was named young player of the year, whilst awards in the lower divisions went to Airdrieonians FC's Owen Coyle, Queen of the South FC's John O'Neil and East Fife FC's Paul McManus, all strikers.

Johnstone recognised
Former Celtic and Scotland winger Jimmy Johnstone, who is suffering from motor neurone disease, received a special merit award.
