Golden Shoe: Sonck climbs to second

Members

Wesley Sonck climbed to joint second in the European Golden Shoe rankings.

Quiet weekend for top ten
Sonck’s strike – Genk's second in a 3-2 win against R. Charleroi SC on Saturday night – was number 28 of the season for the Belgian international and lifted him up from sixth place, the only climber in the top ten of the rankings after a weekend of blanks for many of his rival marksmen. Leading striker Mario Jardel failed to find the target in Sporting Clube de Portugal's victory over SC Salgueiros.

Van Hooijdink up four places
Not so Pierre van Hooijdonk of Feyenoord, however, who rose four places to 16th with a goal in the 5-0 derby defeat of Sparta Rotterdam to cap a memorable week. The Dutch international had scored the last-minute equaliser and winning penalty against PSV Eindhoven in the UEFA Cup three days earlier.

Cissé and Catanha score
Below Van Hooijdonk in joint-17th place are AJ Auxerre's Djibril Cissé and Catanha of RC Celta de Vigo, who moved up four places after a goal apiece in their respective sides' victories over Lille OSC (3-2) and Athletic Club Bilbao (6-1).

  • Only the leading five countries (Spain, Italy, Germany, France and England) on the UEFA Ranking after the 2000/01 season have 2 as their multiplier. This is to emphasise the difference in (international) performance level between the clubs from those countries and those from the other countries.
  • In a change from last season, a player cannot first play in a summer league (e.g. Norway) and then in a winter league (e.g. Spain) and combine the points total for each season. For example, last season John Carew played for Rosenborg BK and then moved to Valencia CF for the start of the Spanish season. From this season, he would have had two separate rankings.
