FC Girondins de Bordeaux coach Elie Baup has accepted a one-year contract extension with the club.

Elie Baup, the FC Girondins de Bordeaux coach, has accepted a one-year contract extension with the French first division club.

End of speculation
The club had been anxious to put an end to speculation surrounding Baup’s future. “To stop all the gossip, I can announce that Elie Baup will also be with us next season,” Jean-Louis Triaud, the Bordeaux president, announced. “Knowing we have several important matches to play, I’d like the club to end the season in full serenity,” he said.

Winning weekend
Bordeaux are in sixth place in Le Championnat after their 2-1 win over RC Lens at the weekend and are chasing fifth place and the UEFA Cup place it would bring.

Enthusiastic
“I will continue my work with this team with enthusiasm,” said Baup. “During the five years I have been here we have achieved a lot of good work. After having received the answers I expected [from the board], I have decided to stay one more year. I’m sure that next year we will have a strong team and be able to fulfil expectations.”

Le Championnat winners
Baup has had success with the club, leading them to Le Championnat in 1999. The following season, his team participated in the UEFA Champions League, reaching the second group stage.

Chance of silverware
Since then, however, Bordeaux have not progressed but they do have a chance to win some silverware this season as they face FC Lorient on 20 April in the French League Cup final.
