Nîmes Olympique SC knocked AS Monaco FC out of the Coupe de France on penalties on Sunday.

Struggling second division side Nîmes Olympique SC pulled off a remarkable Coupe de France upset by defeating AS Monaco FC in a penalty shoot-out on Sunday.

Charpenet equaliser
After Souleymanne Camara had put top-flight Monaco into the lead, Nîmes, five points adrift at the foot of France's second tier, salavaged a 1-1 draw thanks to Johann Charpenet's equaliser eleven minutes from the end of normal time.

Hero Delaroche
After a goalless period of extra time, goalkeeper Marc Delaroche was the shoot-out hero for Nîmes, making two saves to send the minnows through to the last four.

Missed penalties
Monaco's Mexican international defender Rafael Marquez put his penalty wide before Delaroche grabbed the spotlight with saves from defender Gael Givet and Argentine midfielder Lucas Bernardi.

'Victory deserved'
Nîmes coach Bernard Boissier said: "The lads were valiant tonight. They played a quality match and they deserved victory."
