Sliema Wanderers FC put seven goals past struggling Lija Athletic FC as the first phase of the Maltese Premier League came to a close on Sunday.

Lija fell to their sixth consecutive defeat thanks to an own goal, two strikes from Danilo Doncic and further goals from Rupert Mangion, Ian Ciantar, Orosco Anoman and Nenad Veslji. The league now splits into two six-team sections - one playing for the Championship, the other to avoid relegation - where each team will start with half of their current points tally.

Hibernians FC will begin their 'Championship Pool' campaign on 20 points after beating ten-man Pietà Hotspurs FC 1-0. Substitute Antoine Zahra's 52nd-minute goal was enough to seal the victory over Pietà, who had Jamie Pace sent off after half an hour.
