Article body
Totti goal enough
A fine individual goal from Francesco Totti in the 24th minute was enough to give Roma victory and move them two points ahead of Internazionale FC in the Serie A table.
Inter held
The win would still not have been enough to take Roma to the summit had Inter not been restricted to a solitary point from their home game with S.S. Lazio on Sunday evening.
Vieri goes close
Few would have predicted a 0-0 draw between two usually free-scoring sides but that was exactly what happened at the Giuseppe Meazza stadium. Inter striker Christian Vieri's first-half shot against the post was the closest anyone came to breaking the deadlock.
Muzzi denied
Juventus beat Udinese Calcio 3-0, thanks to first-half goals from Gianluca Zambrotta, Pavel Nedved and Edgar Davids after Udinese's Roberto Muzzi had seen his fifth-minute penalty saved by Gianluigi Buffon.
Chievo come back
Third-placed Chievo came from behind to win 2-1 at Atalanta BC as second-half goals from Massimo Marazzina and Federico Cossato overturned the half-time advantage given the hosts by Daniele Berretta.
Di Vaio treble
At the other end of the table, a hat-trick from Marco di Vaio gave Parma AC a 4-3 victory at fellow strugglers AC Venezia, the Gialloblu striker netting the winner in the 90th minute after Venezia had fought back from 3-1 down. Stefano Bettarini and Filippo Maniero (2) were on target for the home side who opened the scoring but went in 3-2 behind at the break.
Cannavaro dismissed
The other goal for Parma - who had Italian international Fabio Cannavaro dismissed early in the second half - came from Emiliano Bonazzoli, who also provided two assists for Di Vaio. While Parma are now fourth from bottom, AC Fiorentina are just three points above bottom-placed Venezia after their struggles continued with a 3-1 home defeat by AC Perugia.
Perugia win
Daniele Adani headed Fiorentina in front after nine minutes but Perugia - reduced to ten men in the second half by the dismissal of Giovanni Tedesco - replied through Zisis Vryvas, Marco di Loreto and Fabio Grosso.
Zanchi winner
Hellas-Verona FC beat Piacenza FC courtesy of a 74th-minute goal from Marco Zanchi and the visitors' woes were compounded by the subsequent dismissal of midfielder Francelino Matuzalem following a second bookable offence.
Bologna hold on
Bologna FC defeated Brescia Calcio 2-1 thanks to a Fabio Petruzzi own goal and Carlo Nervo effort. Toni's 43rd-minute goal threatened a comeback for Brescia but Bologna held on to their lead and the three points.
