In off the crossbar
Brazilian defender Júlio César - another on-loan player, brought to Lisbon from Real Madrid CF - headed Benfica in front on 18 minutes from a Simão Sabrosa corner. Salgueiros levelled on the stroke of half-time through their captain, João Pedro. Angolan striker Toy fed compatriot Bodunha, whose pass found João Pedro alone in the area and his shot went in off the underside of the crossbar.
Jankauskas double
Benfica regained the lead four minutes into the second half through Lithuanian striker Jankauskas who outjumped goalkeeper Rui Correia to head home. Jankauskas made it three on 72 minutes with a crisp low drive after latching on to a through-pass from Yugoslavian international Ljubinko Drulovic.
Debut for Tiago
Simão scored the fourth a minute from time when he drifted inside from the left, turned and struck a low shot inside the near post. Benfica coach Jesualdo Ferreira had sprung two surprises before the match, giving a debut to Portugal Under-21 midfield player Tiago - signed only last Monday from SC Braga - while starting with Zlatko Zahovic and Drulovic on the bench.
Two points behind leaders
Benfica are now just two points behind leaders Sporting Clube de Portugal who face CF Os Belenenses on Sunday in a Lisbon derby while second-placed Boavista FC take on fourth-placed FC Porto in the Porto derby. The defeat leaves Salgueiros in 13th place, three points above the relegation zone.
