Article body
Mario Jardel scored his 150th and 151st Portuguese first division goals on Sunday evening as Sporting Clube de Portugal beat CF Os Belenenses 2-0 at the José Alvalade stadium.
Red card
Jardel pounced in the 29th minute to score the opening goal, heading a João Pinto cross from the left past Marco Aurélio in the Belenenses goal. Chances came and went for both sides and Belenenses midfield player Paulo César Peixoto was sent off in the 69th minute for a second bookable offence. Jardel headed home his second of the night with six minutes remaining.
Goals record
Greek striker Dimitris Nalitzis, who has joined Sporting on loan in the absence of the injured Marius Niculae, was introduced as a late substitute, but Jardel proved to be the hero and now has 22 goals from 16 appearances this term.
Boavista beat Porto
The win sees Sporting retake their place at the top of the league table after Boavista FC had led the way thanks to a 2-0 win over FC Porto earlier on Sunday. Petit put Boavista ahead after 42 minutes, reacting quickly to stab home after Nuno Frechaut had seen his effort blocked.
Late strike
Porto's Brazilian attacking midfield player Deco was then sent off with four minutes remaining and, with Porto goalkeeper Vítor Baía stranded upfield after making his way up for a corner, Martelinho added a second goal in injury time.
Petit injured
The bad news for Boavista is the loss of Portuguese international Petit, who broke a toe in the challenge that led to Deco's second yellow card. Petit could be out of action for up to two months and the injury will be a blow to the national team's preparation for the 2002 FIFA World Cup. The player is likely to miss the forthcoming friendly matches against Spain and Colombia.
Marítimo in charge
In Sunday's other matches, goals from Danny Miguel and two from Gaúcho helped CS Marítimo to a comfortable 3-1 home win against SC Beira-Mar, while fourth-placed UD Leiria were held to a 2-2 draw by CD Santa Clara. Meanwhile, Varzim SC came from behind to beat Vitória Setúbal 2-1 at home and a late Quinzinho goal salvaged a 2-2 draw for FC Alverca against FC Paços de Ferreira.
