Dundalk mourn passing of McGuill

Former Dundalk FC chairman Enda McGuill, and honorary vice-president of the National League, died on Wednesday morning, aged 71.

Successful period
McGuill was at Oriel Park for almost three decades in various roles, after joining the club in 1971. Dundalk enjoyed the most successful period in their history with McGuill in command.

'Sadly missed'
Football Association of Ireland (FAI) secretary general Brendan Menton led the tributes, saying: "Enda McGuill will be sadly missed by everyone in the game. He was the driving force in Dundalk football for many years and was an excellent representative for the club and an astute administrator. We all mourn his passing."

'A regular at matches'
Dundalk chairman Des Denning told the club's official website that McGuill's work would never be forgotten. "In football terms, he was 'Mr. Dundalk'," he said. "For over 30 years he gave his life to Dundalk FC at administrative level. Even when he stepped back over a year ago, he still supported the club and was a regular at home matches. His place in the history of Dundalk Football Club is assured."

Mark of respect
As a mark of respect, Thursday's league fixture between Dundalk and Longford Town FC will be postponed until Saturday.
