Italian football mourns Sergio Gori

Italian European Cup and UEFA Cup winner Sergio 'Bobo' Gori has died aged 77, following a short illness in his home city of Milan.

Gori made his Inter and professional debut under legendary Nerazzurri coach Helenio Herrera in December 1964 away at Dinamo Bucharest, and was part of the squad that won the European Cup and Intercontinental Cup in 1965, adding to consecutive league titles in 1965 and 1966.

He moved to Cagliari in the summer of 1969, shining as attacking partner of Luigi Riva in Sardinia. He scored Cagliari's second goal in the 2-0 win against AS Bari which sealed the historical 1969/70 Scudetto for the islanders.

He later spent two seasons in Turin with Juventus, where he added a fourth Serie A title to his trophy cabinet, as well as lifting the 1976/77 UEFA Cup with the Bianconeri.

Gori is only one of six players in history to have won the league with three different clubs in Italy, alongside Giovanni Ferrari, Filippo Cavalli, Pierino Fanna, Aldo Serena and Attilio Lombardo. He also played three times for Italy, and was a member of the 1970 FIFA World Cup squad which finished runners-up to Brazil.

"Sardinia and Cagliari never abandoned his heart," the club said. “He left in the night leaving a great void. Cagliari and its people mourn him with great pain, remembering the enormous value of the man as well as the footballer, joining in the pain of his family and loved ones."
