Huygens was elected for a one-year term by the association’s board of directors. He initially took the president’s role on an interim basis earlier this summer after Mehdi Bayat announced that he would be retiring as president after two years in office.
A long-standing servant to the Belgian association, Huygens’ term of office will continue until June 2022. He has been a member of the board of directors since 2013, and was appointed RBFA first vice-president in July 2020. Huygens was awarded honorary membership of the association in 2016.
Huygens promised that his presidency would be marked by a positive contribution to football. “Listening to all stakeholders, brainstorming to seek improvement and giving assistance will remain my personal incentives,” he said. “I count on the cooperation of all those involved in football.”
