Celje sunk by double-winning Maribor

League champions NK Maribor completed the double on Wednesday by defeating NK Celje on penalties to win the Slovenian Cup final – the seventh cup triumph in the club's history.

Having already won the Slovene First League in April, Maribor were favourites heading into the cup final against a team that finished 48 points behind them in the league. They did not have it all their own way, though, and despite dominating possession and territory, Maribor twice found themselves trailing. First Dalibor Volaš (46) was needed to equalise after Alen Romih's strike (35), then Matic Črnic (99) cancelled out Benjamin Verbič's effort (91).

The score was 2-2 after 120 minutes and only penalties could separate the teams. Celje suffered heartbreak as Maribor goalkeeper Marko Pridigar saved decisively from Matej Centrih to earn his side a 3-2 shoot-out win.

"I don't like [penalties]," said Maribor coach Darko Milanič after the match. "So the shoot-out was the hardest thing for me, even though we went behind twice in the match. We've had a really great season. Now is time for a vacation. But on Monday I'll probably already miss all the guys and will hardly be able to wait to start preparing for the new season."
