Bouncing back
Lyon, who had suffered back-to-back defeats in their previous two matches, opened the scoring after 25 minutes through Hatem Ben Arfa. Karim Benzema secured the victory, scoring his 14th league goal of the season with 15 minutes remaining.
Missed chance
Meanwhile, AS Nancy-Lorraine missed the chance to go into second after an 86th-minute Samir Nasri goal gave Olympique de Marseille an away point as the match finished 1-1. Nancy are now eight points behind Lyon in third. Earlier, RC Lens moved out of the bottom three and into 16th in the 20-team table with a 2-1 win at ten-man Valenciennes FC. Kévin Monnet-Paquet came off the bench to strike a 64th-minute winner.
Comfortable for PSG
Elsewhere, Paris Saint-Germain FC won 3-0 at home against bottom side FC Metz with Péguy Luyindula and Jérôme Rothen claiming first-half goals before Amara Diané rounded off the scoring ten minutes after the interval. OGC Nice maintained their position in fourth after a 1-1 draw at Stade Rennais FC and there were also home wins for AS Monaco FC over FC Sochaux-Montbéliard and LOSC Lille Métropole over Le Mans UC 72 while SM Caen and AJ Auxerre shared a goalless draw.
